Assent, Accent

Well, it got me sort of right. I'm a transplanted Chicagoan, now in Charlottesville, VA, via Richmond, VA. You?

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

This probably isn't all that different.

There are actually 13 identified dialects of English in America, so someone told me. But, what it really boils down to around here is if you pronounce pin and pen the same way.

Also, did my mom pass this quiz along to you? Because she sent it to me only two days ago.

Yes, CC: but do you say "pop"?

LC: don't you say "pen" and "pin" the same way? I think you do. And nope, I got it from Eekbeat not your mom, although it's pretty awesome that you would ask that. We remain, of course, the best of myspace buddies, me and your mom. When will she visit us again and drink wine in my backyard?

Of course I say "pop." You think I'd say "soda"? That's a specific liquid, sometimes mixed with scotch.

I can't imagine pin and pen sounding the same.

VA from birth, so, of course, I was placed in The South.

What's funny is that those from the North, Midwest, or Not The South can tell I'm a "Southern Boy" but those from the South usually think I'm from "Up North." The rest can't tell.

I kinda lost the accent intentionally when I was younger (in middle school) but, somehow, gained it back. It's hard to explain.

And as far as Southern accents go, "Pin" and "Pen" are, a vast majority of the time, both pronounced as "Pin."

I got South overwhelmingly- but thats not a surprise since I am from Virginia- although it may surprise some that I grew up in Northern Virginia and have "it". But then again, I had Richmond parents, and I hung with the locals in Loudoun County...

No one from the Deep South has ever thought I sounded like a Yankee- just a little "odd". Is what they say. They can spot a Virginia accent, but most people from the North lump all the Southern accents together.
