Los Caballeros - a Croatian mariachi band!
Jud Jud - my roommate Bayleaf says she heard a 7" with even better songs; this video gives you at some idea of their schtick.
Petra Haden - this song has been linked all over the place (cf. here, here, and here), so you're probably the last one to the party if you still haven't heard it. And no, I have no idea what's going on with the video.
and finally:
Darth Vader Plays the Blues - making me chuckle more than probably it should, but I'm giddy; and it's Friday; so I'll deal.

Bonus! Boobers sent me this crazy Imogen Heap video clip.

That je-je song is extraordinary. The video eh but the music is just lovely to listen to, resolve the syllables, nod in time to. Sort of an unloved child of Scat. (No not that, get your mind out of the gutter.)
Wow, and the Petra Haden song (which no, I had not heard of yet, and thanks). Can one think of a piece of music as "a capella" if drums play such a principal part in it? (Those were drums right, not somebody with a really percussive voice.) That bridgy part where she was singing all low could have not been included without affecting the quality of what was produced one way or the other.
I'm pretty sure they're real drums. I've heard a capella groups that beat-box the drum parts. So I guess maybe this isn't a capella under the strictest of defnitions. But I really like what the (subtle) drum part adds, and so, personally, I'm willing to overlook it.
Well no need to overlook it necessarily, right -- a song is not better or worse depending on whether it is deemed "a capella". I was just wondering about whether that term would describe this accurately.
My friend, who produces a capella groups, told me tonight that several groups now use real drum tracks. He also had some interesting opinions about that Petra track. Probable blog forthcoming on the matter.
I look forward to reading it. I was happy to learn, as I zipped around the internets, that Petra Haden is a violinist (like all the very best musicians) and that she has a number of albums I could go buy and listen to; one of them is a totally vocal cover of The Who "Sell Out", of which Pete Townshend says, "I felt like I'd received something better than a Grammy."
